Teaching Portfolio

Standard 7: engage professionally with colleagues, parents/caregivers and the community
7.1 Meet professional ethics and responsibilities
Understand and apply the key principles described in codes of ethics and conduct for the teaching profession.
-
Throughout my portfolio I have used numerous documents and images that have been de-identified to adhere with confidentiality regulations. The code of ethics [evidence 7.1_1] as defined by the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia states their core values as being “Integrity, Respect and Responsibility” and I believe that I have upheld these values throughout not only my portfolio evidence but also throughout my pre-service placements.
-
During the first week of my placement I sent a letter home with students seeking permission from parents to photograph the students. Parents were asked to consent to their child being photographed for use in my portfolio and for samples of their work to be included also. Gaining the parents approval was extremely important to me in building a trusting, repectful and professional relationship with them. Evidence 7.1_2 shows the consent form distributed to parents.

7.2 Comply with legislative, administrative and organisational requirements
Understand the relevant legislative, administrative and organisational policies and processes required for teachers according to school stage.
-
Prior to beginning my placements I was required by South Australian law to undergo a police clearance check for working with children and complete the child protection training course “Promoting Safety and Wellbeing”. I was also required to complete my Responding to Abuse and Neglect (RAN) training and my Basic Emergency Life Support (BELS) training to gain registration with the Teachers Registration Board.

7.3 Engage with the parents/carers
Understand strategies for working effectively, sensitively and confidentially with parents/carers.

It was suggested by one of my mentor teachers during my pre-service placement that I draft a letter of introduction to send home to parents. Following her advice I wrote a letter that introduced who I was and gave a little information about my family and my interests. I found this to be a very valuable task as the response from parents was extremely encouraging and helped to establish my position in the classroom community. [evidence 7.3_1]
-
Every morning before the bell went, I would circulate around the room chatting with parents and students. I believe this is essential in building a positive relationship with parents and caregivers and also students. As the parent of a reception student, I truly value the warm and approachable nature of my son’s teacher, as it conveys a feeling of trust and care as I leave my child with him. This is how I aspire to have the parents in my class feel as they leave their most valuable asset within my care. Evidence 7.3_2 is a photo of my son and I on his first day of school.

7.4 Engage with professional teaching networks and broader communities
Understand the role of external professionals and community representatives in broadening teachers’ professional knowledge and practice.
-
During my final placement I was fortunate enough to meet with staff from Talking Matters: Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy. They provide ongoing support and advice to students that require their assistance. During our meeting the staff presented numerous suggestions and alternative methods that could assist the student with his learning difficulties, from visual cues on his desk to cushions that support his sensory needs. I was amazed at their knowledge and of the support that was offered toward the student. [evidence 7.4_1]
-
I have been a member of the Scout Association for the majority of my life, and I pride myself on my values of community service, loyalty and my willingness to help others. I am still actively involved with the Scout Association and believe that this involvement has greatly contributed to my professional knowledge and practice as it has provided me with an ever expanding circle of friends and acquaintances who have not only supported me but have also provided me with opportunities and experiences working with youth and peers. Evidence 7.4_2 is an image of me being recognised for 20 years of service.
